Week 5: Silicone Casting #2



I attempted to recreate this accuator that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I liked that it incorporated embroidery and decided to give it a go. I didn’t have time to order the water-soluble embroidery paper, so I went with fabric instead. 

my very detailed plan laser cutting the mold and clamp glueing the mold together I found this fabric at the MakerSpace and chose it because it was not stretchy. Turns out that doesn't matter for this. I played around with laser cutting it and it worked well. Switched to a cotton fabric finished spiral Checking to see the mold is level before I pour. First layer in - was hard to tell how much to pour. Soaked the fabric spiral in silicone and then arranged on the cured layer. Poured another layer of silicone over - a little worried I didn't cover the fabric enough. fully cured was a little difficult to demold needed to seal it better - the gap i made for the tubing was too big first tried with hot glue many friends helping phil recommended lining up clamps edge to edge because air was still getting out somehow. i ended up with this monster progress - it spins a little! next i tried sealing it with silpoxy. it smelled really bad sadly there were still leaks. I tried the soapy water method which helped, but I could not fill all of the leaks. finished product. inflates pretty well, but not totally airtight.
